I'm a tad overwhelmed by the many choices when it comes to purchasing DVD-Rs...can you tell us specifically what recording speed is needed? (minimum)

Kami [e]
If you're attending the swim clinic tomorrow, it would be helpful if you could bring a blank dvd so that after Steve videos everyone, he can copy your video to a dvd for you.
(Otis Spunkmeyer banana nut muffins are optional, but they're one of his favorites.)

I use the ironman hrm. I works really good for what I paid for it. I will be getiing the Suunto T6 though, I have read great things about it.

Matthew I just got this model:
Polar RS800 G3 GPS, itīs really good, one of the best. I would always go with POLAR. Steve F. and I bought a couple years ago POLAR 625X, he can tell you about it. Good luck and let me know what you finally got, adios!!!

Bonny
Matt - I own a couple different brands of POLAR HR monitors, which I did use...if GPS is a feature that interests you and running pace (as well as HR), you may also want to look at Garmins.... I own a Garmin 305 (there is a 405 in the works now too) and the 305 has a multisport feature...you can get a quick release for your bike...will you be at the swim clinic tomorrow? I can bring it if you want to check it out....

I don't have problems with my POLARS in the pool either if you were wondering.

Matthew Madison [e]
Does anyone here use a Polar or Ironman heart rate monitor? If so, what kind, and are you happy with it? I'm in the market for one, but not sure which model would best serve me in multisport.

I need to ride Sat. & Sun. Charity & I probably will ride Sun. starting at 12:30 from Faulkner.

  Howdy Folks:

Dummy me! I forgot to put in the e-mail I sent out that the swim training/taping was this coming Friday night at 6 PM. Oops!

We had 3 new members contact me today with their address information so we now (gulp) 38 members!

Also I received a super e-mail from Trace Adams. He has started a new job as a trainer at DCS Fitness in Jacksonville and has decided to not open up a coaching business. He has offered to be the "un-official" coach of ETT and will help with maybe a clinic or two or will help individuals when he can if you contact him by e-mail. His E-mail is: traceadams@msn.com

Thanks Trace!

Wowww, look at all the things I am missing being so far away. That looks great!! A swimming clinic, shame!! I wish I was there with you guys.I hope you had fun and learn a lot. Well, I just got back from a triathlon campus in Canary islands(close to Lanzarote). It was for 8 days,we swam 12.000mts, rode 400miles(ufff) and 40miles run weekly. I couldnīt believe it. The rides were pretty tough, most of them big mountains, uphill.Donīt think I am doing that everyweek, my toughest week before that was 200miles and 30miles weekly.I really learn a lot. My new coach organized it and we were 15 triathletes. Now I am tired, this coming sunday I will do my first race, 1/2 hilly marathon. Uff just 114days for Lanzarote and 164days for Austria to go!!! You have fun at the clinic, I miss you guys, ahh I just bought a power tap 2.4,from now on I will ride with watts, I am really excited. Miss you guys, say hi to John Cobb!!

  Duke,

I just read your email about the swim clinic. I need to clarify that my stroke count is not down since the TI workshop; my stroke count increased by four strokes. However, I expect it to decrease eventually, and regardless, I think my stroke somehow is more efficient (if that's possible with an increased stroke count).

  Longview Members -

I know many of you are doing the Freeze Your Fanny run/bike events on Saturday AM...for those of you that are not, I am looking for someone that may be interested in a long slow run...I can start 4:30am or after - 10am the latest. I would like to do 14 miles, at about a 9:25-9:40 pace. If you were interested, and it worked out with timing, we could start around 6:30ish if you would like to attend a YOGA class (hey, it makes you stretch) right afterwards...I could get a day pass for you. With or without YOGA, let me know if you have interest. Thanks.

  Clint,

You may have to arm wrestle Steve for the muffins, if they're Otis Spunkmeyer.

Clint [e]
Ooooh! Banana nut muffins! Count me in!

See you guys Friday.
  Wednesday, January 30th 2008 - 12:31:12 PM

Kami [e]
Kahne--Thanks for setting this up. Yes, I plan to be there.

Bonny--You remembered! (must be Otis Spunkmeyer)

Travis--I wish I had attended a Total Immersion workshop when I first started swimming in Aug. 2006. Hopefully you can attend the swim clinic on Friday and identify any fundamentals on which you may need to work.

Anyone interested--Steve and I plan to do our 12 mile evening run from my house again this week, probably Thurs. 2.2 mile loops, so you can do as much or little as you want. Sorry my details about last night's run didn't post quickly. By the way, if you ever say to Steve, "Let's do speedwork," you have to mean it because he doesn't let you back out.

This friday is fine with me. I am far from being a swim critic but the underwater camera is pretty revealing. Maybe we can share some ideas. Duke, Kami & I went through the two day clinic put on by Total Emersion. They pounded into our heads, in the classroom & the pool, fundamentals of effeciency. I have yet to refine my swimming to where I am satisfied. I have discovered that what we think we are doing underwater is not always reality. The most helpful part of the TI workshop was the instructors analyzing our videos. Though it be a little embarassing at times. My goal is to improve my swim (my weakest event), get Carlos off my back, and at the same time, keep up with Duke.

I'm waiting to hear mainly from Steve: Mr Cameraman! It's at 6 p.m. at the OHPE Center. You go down Fifth St. and turn at the light at the east end of campus (by the soccer field). You can park across from OHPE. It's the big building behind Wagstaff Gym, across the street from the Tyler Art Museum. I'll wait to hear more from Sondra, but I expect we'll all just come in the front door and have access to the changing rooms and showers.

Kami, are you coming? Charity? Anyone/everyone??? BONNY?

Steve & I are running the Azalea 10k route, starting at Bergfeld Park at about 6:15 tonight. We'll be around the water fountain area and plan to run the Azalea 10k route. This will be speedwork for me, easy run for Steve. We're still planning to run 12 miles one evening this week, maybe Thurs. My cell # is 903-330-0309.

Yes!!! The TJC pool is exclusively OURS! I heard from Sondra Ramsour at TJC and the East Texas Triathletes can have the pool for one hour on Friday at 6 p.m. for the price of 2 life guards: $20! So Steve can get his camera and we can have our "clinic"!

Oh yeah I forgot mention that Bob Hepler (UTT XC Coach) is probably having surgery as I type this on a hamstring that has been damaged. They have to reattach a tendon or something like that. Also he is has necrosis in his hip and has to have a piece of that removed. I just found out last night. I don't know if he wants me to share or not but he is a member of the club now. Be sure to keep him in your prayers.

  Howdy Folks:

I have updated the Member page (http://ettriathletes.com/members.htm) to reflect the USAT Roster that Kahne will be sending in soon. At this point we have 35 members moving us up to a Category 4 club size (30-59 members). Two names on the member page (Russell Ivey and Chuck Lafferty) are not on the USAT roster because I do not have all of their information needed. Carlos is not on the USAT roster but is still on the member page because he is always with us in spirit and contributes with great comments to everyone on their trainings and competitions. I have added the location city for each member just for your information as well as highlighted the officers of our club and related their position. I also changed a few e-mail addresses per member requests.

As for your e-mail addresses on the website—I have triple protected these. It will be difficult (but not impossible) for spammers to get them because they have been ASCII coded, encased in Javascript, and then a SPAMbot has been added.

Happy Training!

Just wanted to let those in the Longview area know that the Longview Bike Club is having their first meeting of the year tomorrow night at 6:30 at Jason's Deli. Come on out if you like.

Hope everybody had a great weekend. Especially Sunday, since it warmed up a bit.

  Ironman SF,

Wind tunnel? This is the first I've heard of needing to cycle in a wind tunnel. Someone insisted that I do Buffalo Springs, but failed to mention any wind tunnel! Is there anything else I need to be doing?

Anyone interested: Steve and I are planning a mock Azalea 10k race Tuesday night--10k race pace. I'll post time & meeting place details as soon as I know. We'll be doing our evening 12 mile run later this week, maybe Thurs.

William--I'm sure you can be ready for Buffalo Springs, as long as you're not injured.

Bonny--No problem with the swim time. You'll do great. (Don't leave your chip in your wetsuit!)

  Sunday, January 27th 2008 - 08:53:18 PM

  William,

Me again. Yes, I think you would easily be ready by then. The swim is always wetsuit because the canyon lake is spring fed. Do some training on Killer Hill, some TSP running and some more cycling in a wind tunnel and you will be fine.

  William,
Buffalo Springs is one of my favorite races. When you finish there, you know you've gotten the full meal deal. All of the elements are there. Heat, wind, hills & competition. I think Charity could drum up a brand new "look" just for this race. I would do it again this year, but it would be too close to my IM.

  Sunday, January 27th 2008 - 08:32:58 PM

Bonny Workman [e]
  Travis,

I am contemplating a 1/2 IM this year, but Buffalo Springs conflicts with a planned family vacation. I will more than likely do Iron Star on November 9th provided I think I can do the swim before the cut off they give. I got the clearance from my family that this one is okay...I have fulfilled the only request by husband on it, and that was to increase my life insurance policy.

William - if you are looking for a vote, my novice vote is yes, provided your foot heals.

  Hey Clint,

I live in Tyler...so anyways...yeah, but since B&B is canceled that gives me more training time for Spring Fever. I think I want to get up to a 100 miles of solid riding about 2 weeks before. I usually ride with with Mike Follis, Chauncey Deller, and his brother Eric.

Matt,

I can't attend the clinic because of work, but you have to promise to take good notes and tell me what you learn. I would be interested in hearing.

Ok Gene is running on the treadmill up here I am about to go tell him to throw in some fartleks so he can beat Steve in Athens ;)

  Update:

I didn't get the job at Trinity. Not surprisingly, someone with more experience got the position. In the meantime, I talked to Jeramie today about hours and we are working on it. I've also applied to numerous other jobs. Bonny has been helping me out and I appreciate that. We will see.

I haven't been very motivated for a while now, but hopefully I can make the most out of the next 5-6 weeks before Athens. My feet are doing good so that's a good thing. See you guys

I've added the fitting clinic, Athens Trial Run, and our meeting details to the calendar so please check them out. I also added a link to an article on John Cobb fittings that I found interesting. There is also a link to the meeting agenda so please review it and let me know if we need to add any other club business.

Glad you found us! Good luck on your trainings--wish I could ride that fast! I added your IMAZ event to the calendar.

  Everyone:

I just spoke with Steve Farris, and the date for the John Cobb bike clinic has been set for Monday, February the 4th at 7:00 PM. It will be held at Elite Bicycles, located on the back side of the shopping center behind Chilis. If you don't know where it is, feel free to contact me.

Stan Wilson was the first to volunteer to be the guinea pig, so he will be given the wonderful opportunity. The fitting will take approximately 2-2.5 hours. Stan, please contact Steve or myself to let us know you are still interested.

For the rest of the members, I strongly urge you attend this clinic. John will be giving awesome information as he fits Stan. Not only is it important that we let him know we value the fact he took time out of his very busy schedule to help our team, but what you learn from him is priceless. I mean the guy used to fit Lance Armstrong!

Clint [e]
  William,
That sounds really good. As Bonny mentioned, I am smack-dab in the hell that is Ironman training. Oh, but I love this hell! You mention long rides. I've recently learned that long rides are relative after riding with Gina. A long ride for me is anything over 50, but to her it's quite different.

On a flat course I try to maintain an 18-19 avg over my longer rides of 60-90 miles. Usually 1-2 mph slower with hills. I'll be building over the next 6-8 weeks. I'm at 85 tomorrow, and I'll be at 90 next week.

If anybody else is interested, we should try to make this a weekly event. Just because you have no intentions of riding that long doesn't mean you can't join in for at least a part of the ride. I have no problem riding smaller loops, especially if that means I have company.

Does anybody know any good routes? I'm currently using routes made by the Longview Bike Club.

Clint
  Friday, January 25th 2008 - 09:08:20 AM

Kami [e]
Ashley, Don't worry. Some of us are training for longer distance races, so that's why we're putting in lots of miles.

Bonny, I decided to stop focusing on my hips/kick/timing because I was so defeated by it that I couldn't face the pool. I went back to focusing on just the things that I seem to be able to get, as difficult as it has been, and just tried to swim and maintain them. I was able to do that for the 42 laps, with constant concentration and making corrections as needed. The lower half of my body is not pulling its weight, literally, much less propelling the rest of me, but I just lack the coordination to put it all together yet--plus it was fatiguing my lower back so badly. When I have everything else down, maybe I can try it again.
  Friday, January 25th 2008 - 08:52:33 AM

Bonny
  Kami,

One lap to 42 non-stop? Wow. I guess the drills were helpful?

Thanks for the updates on the runs, William. Clint might actually be a good training partner for your long rides... Clint should have noted that he is IMAZ training - (spring, not fall like Kami)...his planned brick for this Saturday is an 85...not a typo 85 mile bike ride and then a 4 mile run....yikes.

Kami, yes, I did my longest pool swim ever (in my whole life-lol) 53 laps. Yes, for some of you that is just a dip in the pool in the am, I know. I am so ready for it to warm up so I can start open water swimming.

William Ritter [e]
  Hey everyone,

Just to clear things up. The Longview Running Club is having a 5k event on February 9th, at 8AM I believe at Lake Gladewater. I've run out there before and it's a nice place around at the lake. Overall, it is good training for a triathlete since it is low key.

The "Cheetah" Memorial 5k is March 1st 8AM at Springhill High School in Longview 8AM. I understand they have some unique things for this event. "Cheetah" a.k.a. Norbert Korzeniewski was killed around the end of august to the beginnings of September last year when I was still president of the club. He was in his late 40's and his truck has stalled out on a highway in Longview and had gotten out to push it when another car struck his truck and his truck ran over him tragically ending in a death. He left behind two kids and a wife. He was actually the person who got me into the Longview Running Club when I was 12 years old.

Due to injuries I doubt I will make the club run in February and I might be a volunteer or running real easy at the Cheetah 5K.

To Clint: I am hoping to begin my triathlon training either next Saturday (Feb.3rd) or sometime after with my long bike rides Saturday mornings....if you can average 16-20 mph for a very long time that would be great.

I am actually think I am gonna bike race in March and see where my talent takes me with that.

March 15- Beauty and the Beast 5k - Tyler
March 29- Spring Fever -Sulphur Springs

Thank you all for the warm welcome and the wonderful advice (Kami, Bonny, Kahne, Clifford, Duke, WK and others) I am in awe of some of the miles you folks are putting in. I know the Athens sprint will kill me-- hopefully not though.

I will absolutely be in Athens on Feb 23rd for the practice run. That will really help me!

Thanks again. I really look forward to learning from each of you.

  Bonny,

I'll have to work on that one. Actually, last week I could have said, "I can't swim one lap at the pool without stopping." But this week I did 42 laps without stopping, so I'll have to come up with something else.

I hear you've been swimming long!

  Hey all,
I met a few of you at the meeting at Tyler State Park a few months back, and I had no clue that this forum existed. I thought it would be a good place to post and see if anybody is interested in riding on the weekends. I was hoping to get out both Saturday and Sunday this weekend, preferably in the Longview area. If anybody else has a ride already planned, let me know.

Duke, My biggest excitement on last night's run was when my hero rescued me from turning my ankle. I should put him on my Road ID: Contact--Hero. The second most exciting thing was being on the last mile. My heart rate did go up a bit when I thought for a brief moment that we were all locked out of the house, in the cold.

Charity, How are your feet today?

Bonny Workman [e]
Yes - there is a LRC run on March 1st...for those of you that CAN make...it is called the Cheetah Run - there is information on it on their site. I do know the members have worked hard for door prizes, and are even getting together some age group prizes among other things - I think it is best for William to say something about the run - it is actually a fundraiser for the family of a man that passed away last year. I did not personally know him, but I know William did.

  Travis:

I sent you an e-mail with the form for membership. Let me know if you get it. Sometimes AOL conflicts with Hotmail.

Steve and Kami:

Thanks for including me on the run last night! I had a good one after I loosened my bungee laces a notch or two. The run was unevenful--no bullets or high speed chases this time!

Everyone:

I received a note from Bonny saying that there was a Longview Running Club event on Feb. 1, so doing the Athens trial run would work better on the 23rd. I checked with Steve, so let's plan the trial run for that date. This is the same day as our club meeting that afternoon at 5 PM in Tyler. Don't miss this opportunity--it was the single "best" thing I did to prepare for Athens last year.

  Duke,

I am actually working out at etmc cedar creek lake now, with my primary job is to teach water fitness class and take care of the pool, while I tend to more of helping out on the floor and doing fitness assessments occasinally and folding lots and lots of towels. Hopefully, within a few weeks I can start joining ya'll on the activities again ;)

To those of you that might be interested, Duke & I plan on going to Athens a week or maybe two before the race for a training day. Five dollars will get you in the pool. It's a very low key day, consisting of swimming for a while, cycling the 14mi course and running a mile or so, or the 5k if your that energetic. If this is your first triathlon, it could be helpful with getting rid of some of the jitters. E-mail Duke or I if you are interested and we will choose the sat. (feb. 23 or march 1st).

  William:

I got it covered with Travis. He sent me an e-mail and I'll send him the form for the information we need tomorrow.

Are you working evenings now for ETMC?

  Travis,

As an executive board member for the club, I would encourage ET Tri membership only, due to the fact that this club is free and we welcome you. Please send your name, age, dob, address, email to Duke Gill's email. We will be glad to have you as a member.

Thanks,

William

I think that Friday, February 8th appears to be getting the least resistance. Steve has been handling this with John so far, so I will defer to him on the final decision. I will try and call Steve tonight to see what he thinks. Possible locations are Elite Bicycles (behind Chilis in Tyler) and John's house (Whitehouse).

  Matt / Steve:

It looks as from all of the responses that the best date for the clinic is in the evening (after 4:30) on Monday, February 4 or Friday February 8. Either will be great for me and I'll certainly be there! Thanks Steve and Matt for talking to John and getting this terrific opportunity arranged. Let us know which date you arrange and I'll add a note to the news and calendar page of the website.

I cannot attend the clinic if it's on Tues. Feb. 5 because I teach a class from 6p-10p. Also, Charity works on Tues. & Thurs. nights.
